WB SLST 2025 Arabic Syllabus for Class XI-XII
This syllabus is designed to develop a comprehensive understanding of Arabic language and literature, focusing on translation, explanation, grammar, and literary history. The total marks for the examination are60 , divided into four main components.
1. Prose Translation & Explanation (16 Marks)
Students will study selected Arabic prose passages from both classical and modern sources. The focus will be on:
- Accurate translation of prose texts into English or the prescribed language.
- Detailed explanation of vocabulary, idiomatic expressions, and contextual meaning.
- Application oftashkeel (vowel signs) to enhance reading and comprehension skills.
Note: Emphasis will be on understanding the nuances of classical and modern prose styles.
2. Poetry Translation & Explanation (16 Marks)
This section covers selected classical and modern Arabic poetry, including works by renowned poets such asAl-Mutanabbi ,Hafiz Ibrahim , andAl-Zahawi . Students are expected to:
- Translate selected verses accurately.
- Explain poetic devices, themes, and cultural context.
- Applytashkeel to verses to demonstrate proper pronunciation and understanding.
Tip: Familiarize yourself with the historical background of the poets and the literary movements they represent.
3. Grammar (12 Marks)
The grammar component focuses on Arabic morphology and syntax, including:
- Verb forms and conjugations.
- Noun cases and declensions.
- Types of sentences (nominal and verbal).
- Rhetorical devices such asIlmul Bayan andBadi .
- Basic philology concepts to understand language structure and evolution.
Important: Mastery of grammar is essential for accurate translation and comprehension.
4. History of Arabic Literature & Criticism (16 Marks)
This section covers the development of Arabic literature from the pre-Islamic period to modern times (up to 1990). Key areas include:
- Major literary periods and their characteristics.
- Important literary critics and their contributions.
- Significant literary movements, especially in poetry.
- Understanding the evolution of themes and styles over time.
